About Folia Notes

Folia Notes is an independent publication exploring the intersections of nature, culture, history, and ancestral knowledge.

For thousands of years, people and cultures have cultivated deep relationships with the natural world. They have developed knowledge of plants, ecosystems, agriculture, land stewardship, and the interconnectedness of life, passing down ideas, practices, and traditions through generations.

These relationships have shaped how people understand, inhabit, and care for the earth. They are reflected in literature, art, traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and the many ways people have found meaning in the living world.

Through nature writing, poetry, historical exploration, and cultural storytelling, Folia Notes explores these connections and the many perspectives that enrich our understanding of nature.

We celebrate the writers, thinkers, naturalists, artists, and communities whose words, experiences, and knowledge deepen our understanding of the natural world. From nature writing and poetry to traditional knowledge, historical accounts, and the role of plants and landscapes in everyday life, our work is an ongoing exploration of the many connections between people and the living world.

About Our Name

Folia takes its name from the Latin word folium, meaning leaf. Paired with Notes, the name reflects the spirit of the publication: a place for observation, exploration, and the sharing of stories, histories, and knowledge that deepen our understanding of the natural world.
